An administrator on BZFlag has a "@" symbol next to it- most of the time. There are also hidden admins, which appear as regular players but have all permissions. Most of the time if administrators are 'hidden', they co-own the server. That way, people will not know that you have all perms, and therefore, will have better luck at kicking and banning.

Administrators also help keep servers safe and in order. I know this because i own one. If you are dreaming of becoming an admin, the one thing you should never do isk ask for the password or ask to be added to a group. It will always end with a ban. Admin's are also very strict about swearing and hacking. If they notice something dodgy, they will question the player, then ban as soon as possible.

If you are not an administrator, and your not registered (or you are, just not admin) you can test your power by doing this in the command prompt: CD C:\Program Files\BZFlag2.0.10

Then type BZFS -password supersecretpassword -world "DragYourMapFileHere!" then hit enter.

It should say, "No speed limit has been set. Players using 'mouse enhancements' might have trouble with this" When your done with that, open BZFlag, then go to localhost port 5154 and connect. Good luck with that though, it is very hard to do (it took me over 4 months). Also, if you have been playing BZFlag for a long time, you have a better chance at being an administrator. A good admin consists of not abusing their privileges, no swearing, and kicking and banning when nessacary. This can be hard for new admins, so give them some time and if they ask to be removed, remove them. It is rare that a BZFlag player wants to be removed, though if they ask you need to do it. An administrator of a server may be able to start/shutdown the server and edit the many options of it, depending on their permissions. Usually administrators of a server are the ones who own/run the server or are trusted friends of the owner. Administrators are there to help players and kick or ban trouble makers, as defined by each server's rules.

Display

On the scoreboard, most admins have an @ sign next to their name. There is a way, through permissions, for an admin to appear as only a regular registered user with a + and these are called Hidden Admins.

Permissions

Administrators can run many commands on the server depending on the permissions given to them by the server owner, they may include the following:

  • /kick
  • /ban
  • /banlist
  • /mute
  • /say
  • /set
  • /flag (reset,give/take)
  • The list continues...

There are 3 common types of Administrators:

  • Cop (basic administrator)
  • Hidden-admin (administrator that appears as a regular player)
  • Admin (regular administrator)

Becoming Admin

Perhaps the number one rule of becoming a server admin is to never ask to become one. Most owners frown upon this and will not consider you for future promotions. You do not need to bring anything to their attention, if they need an admin, they will ask someone if they would like to become one.

Server owners usually only let trusting people become server admins. People who help others, play a lot at the server(s), or can be trusted may be asked to be admin on a server. Just play nice, be friendly and see what happens!

Being a Good Admin

A good admin exhibits several traits. A good admin enforces and follows the rules set by the server owner, and does not interfere with honest game play. They also are always vigilant for cheaters. The admin supports the server and promotes good and courteous gameplay.
