The callsign is the name of a player in the game. It is also known as the player's username, or handle. Every player on a BZFlag server must have a unique callsign.

The callsign is entered by the user on the join game screen. The callsign can have a maximum length of 32 characters.

==Global Registration==

When using [[Global Registration]], the user's in game callsign and password must match their forum username and password. Players can play on some servers without registering, but registering allows the player to reserve the given callsign and on some servers more permisssions (such as chat or allowing polls).

==Display of callsign==

In-game, when a registered callsign has been authenticated, the callsign is prefixed with a '+' symbol as displayed on the user's screen. If a registered callsign is used, but failed authentication for any reason, it is display with a '-' symbol prefixed. The callsign of the game server's administrator is prefixed with a '@' symbol when they are logged into the game.
