BZFlag requires the use of tactics for one to be successful as a player.

Overview[edit]

Tactics vary greatly based on map style and game modes which are present on the server. The settings which effect players the most are ricochets, jump, game mode, and shot amount. Several maps require specific tactics and methods for allowing one to be successful. A players skill can be enhanced by improving configurations, such as altering the key mapping for radar and shots so that it is easier for one to fire and cycle through radar while playing. This can lead to an advantage vs players who have not altered the default settings in the configurations. In order for one to be a good player, one must be able to know which tactics one must use based on every map and setting. One must know what is an effective counter for each tactic an opponent uses and when to adjust to a different tactic.

Fire Keys

One is able to set multiple fire keys. More fire keys will allow one to shoot more bullets at once. Some players use the "Z", "X", and "C" keys for this purpose. Only two keys can be assigned at once. Scroll down is sometimes used rather than simply using left mouse click. However, if one using the scroll button to fire is a disadvantage, as one's bullets are often too close together, allowing one's opponent to easily drive around them.

It is also important to keep a count of how many shots you and your opponent have left. If you are out of ammo, you should seek cover until you can reload. If your opponent is out of ammo, you should try to rush him while he is reloading.

Radar

For league style play the largest radar is generally a preferred choice for some players. One must be a good dodger for this tactic to be effective.

Increasing the radar size is not sufficient. The bullets should be highly visible. One should increase their length and size till one is able to see them well.

Keyboard or Mouse?

When one first starts playing BZFlag, one might notice there are two options; mouse or keyboard. The mouse can be much better, depending on the map, or the keyboard could be better in certain situations. The mouse is preferred in general, simply due to the broader range of control and precision. The majority of players use the mouse, especially in leagues. The keyboard can difficult to use in a close battle, but becomes easy to use with practice, as does the mouse.

Watch other players.

When one is an observer one should follow players in observer mode. One is recommended to follow the most experienced players. One should try to pick up little things about their playing that will make oneself better. It may take time to do this, but many players consider the effort to be worth it.

Teamwork

On some maps teamwork is required to get accomplish goals in certain maps. One should always have a good communication system with your teammates, and should try to avoid flooding the team channel with apologies for TKing.
